Learning how to get a girl's number from a 6th grader

I had the pleasure of having my coworker's youngest son hanging out in my office. I like to chat with him and see what he's been up to. The young man is 11 years old, so he's been around for a while and knows what he's talking about. We spoke about school and athletics. I brought up how when I was his age I ran track in middle school. He informed me how in the 4th grade he played football, but not anymore. I asked him why, and he said he didn't have time anymore. He was busy with friends... and girls. "Girls?!" I asked. "Yeah, girls." he confirmed.

He proceeded to inform me that he just got a girls number. He had been hollering at her for 2 years, but he got her number yesterday at recess. Playing into the role I do with kids, I seemed shocked. I told him I would need to know how he does it, and I proceeded to take notes (later to be turned into this blog).

The boy said it was easy, and his instruction began. While fiddling with his multicolored Lego gun, he said I would need to start with "the move". When I jokingly asked if he meant a dance move, he corrected me. "No, the move. You know: the move. Like the move they do in the movies." he said. I stretched my arms up to yawn and lowered the one arm as to put it over the shoulders of my invisible neighbor. Yes, that was it. Then you have to do something "dumb" like jumping off a rock and maybe hurting myself. Another example he gave was for me to try doing flips, but with his warning that, "It might hurt." From there he instructed that I talk to her for a while and finally get her number. ("Just like that?" I thought to myself.)

Later in our discussion he told me how he wrote her 36 love notes when he met her in the 4th grade, and now it might pay off. Maybe he could take her on a date on Friday he explained to me.

Just like that, this kid got a girl's number. This young man is inquisitive, friendly, and
creative with Legos. What more could a girl ask for? I took my notes to be posted on this blog so that men the world-over can learn from this wise 4 foot playa.

Cheers!
