I love college humor

A cold winter shot of East Hall on Prospect Hill.

Working in higher education is a blast! I get to hang out with you people all the time, I help students with getting into college, and the workplace is more fun that the corporate world (I assume, just kidding). I do know that I have a very exciting and vibrant workplace. In general, I think college campuses are outstanding communities.

I am a huge proponent of individuals pursuing college degrees, and I love that I have the opportunity to help those in pursuit on higher education. Granted, I am a fanatic of my Alma Mater and my current employer, but if a high school student is determined to go to college I support them where ever they decide to go (as long as it isn't my arch nemesis college).

My coworker sent me these two YouTube links. I did further research on what college related YouTube videos were out there. I was quite satisfied with my findings. I thought I'd share these two with you because one is inspiring and the other is just down right funny (mostly because it's fictitious) Check 'em out!

Not bad!

Agree to Disagree

I have this friend who I will refer to as Station. Station is a likable guy. At the establishments we frequent, he manages to form instant connections with his servers (all I've witnessed have been females). Additionally, every lady he arrives with is stunningly attractive with warm and welcoming personalities. For instance, a lady friend & her friend and I were out for drinks. Station joined us. We had drinks and good times. We left that establishment for another location. Station and my friend rode in one car, while other friend and I rode in another. At the table of the new joint after random conversations I noticed that Station had glitter on his lips. Coincidentally, friend had glitter lip-balm on. hmmmmm...

Tonight when I arrived after much reluctance on my end, I met up with Station his friends. One of them I will call Jessica. Jessica with her unnatural red hair, soft green eyes, and warm smile was attractive to say the least. Towards the end of the night it was obvious that she would be knocking uglies with Station. More power to them.

"So what?" you ask. Clam the F down while I explain (look I've been "celebrating" and it's challenging to type and keep up with your needy ass). I don't judge people (cough), but I do have moral-disputes with Station's life decisions with women. I am no saint!, but I just couldn't see myself entertaining relationships with as many women as he does. (Jealous... mmm... maybe. But at the same time, my soberer self you not approve. I trust that me, more than this.)

So where does that leave me? Writing in my blog, preparing for slumber as I have work in the morning. I also know I have to go back through this to make sure I add links, correct my wording and sentence structure, and inevitably post. All the while, Station takes advantage of Jessica and Mary Jane.

For the third day in a row, I have not taken advantage of the evening's cool temperature to move my possessions from my apartment to the new house. What a waste of time. Now I'm going to go eat leftovers.

One step at a time

I blog about food occasionally. Don't judge.

Anyway, I feel it worthy enough to point out that in the past 2 weeks I've officially began substituting in spinach in my Subway sandwiches, where regularly I've garnished my meal with lettuce.

So, yeah. Umm, obviously I didn't have a plan for this posting. (insert awkward turtle)

This late hour is not offering much in the way of inspiration. Work to advantage of me today, and my only worthwhile escapes were 1.) again seeing the cute administrative assistant who yesterday after complimenting my attire said "You're always very well put together" (C'MON! How is that not blatant flirting?!!?), and 2.) throwing the football around with Coworker in the parking lot for 15 minutes.

I can't hang any longer. I'm off to bed.

What an eventful event-less day

Passed out early yesterday; way before sundown. Woke up around 2 a.m. and chatted with Kristian (probably one of 2 people who read this regularly) in Morocco over Facebook chat, as well as hydrated myself. Yesterday I had joined my coworker and her friends for a day on the Comal River in New Braunfels, TX. I had an outstanding time, and came home with an outstanding sunburn on my upper body. Oh, so hot.

I woke up later this morning around 10 a.m. Again, I hydrated and then began packing. I am moving next weekend for the last time (this year). I've moved quite a bit already to the new house, but still have plenty to move. Today I focused on the kitchen packing stemware, pots & pans, and then packed clothes that I wont need for the rest of the week. It would be Ama-zing if what I packed would load itself into "Bu", my hot and sexy Subaru Legacy (oww oww!)

After taking a late afternoon break with lunch from What-A-Burger, I watched a series of YouTube videos about hate crimes (brought on by Kris' comments about me being racist in my post about my talking to squirrels), music videos, some old commercials that today we'd categorize as sexist, and newscasters being attacked on live TV! Of course, I did this all while Facebooking.

And now, I've just completed watching the season finale of Grey's Anatomy, another guilty pleasure. I've had people tell me what a great episode it was, but I was just not prepared. All I am going to say is that when patient Jeremy said to patient Beth, "Don't you dare die... We're not finished yet... I'm not finished loving you." Well, it brought me to tears. See, I can admit that. Just like I admit Extreme Makeover Home Edition does the same thing to me. Oh, Lawd Jesus!

After the sun sets and the temperature drops down below 80 degrees, I will begin loading up the car to move this load to the new place. So I better get crackin', which means I will probably be sitting here for another hour or so...

Go figure.

p.s. WTF?

You think you have problems?

Most of my friends know that I have an appreciation for squirrels. I guess it's more of a "love" for squirrels. In college as an Orientation Student Leader, I would inform incoming freshmen about out squirrel population on campus. All one of him. Somehow, the past 2 years has caused me to forget his name. I believe his name is Steve. Anyway, Steve was the only squirrel on campus, if you could believe that. He would get into the garbage receptacles and wait until student would walk by before rustling the dang thing and scaring the students while other students would be watching. And although those observing student would laugh, they cried a little on the inside because they fell victim to Steve's antics.

Now in Texas, I find that the campus I'm on is FULL of squirrels. Dozens are right around my office. I can't help but laugh when I see them. I've gotten around to learning their names too! Just yesterday I watched Juan, Miguel, and Sophia chase each other up and down the trunk of a tree. Today on the way back from lunch I stumbled upon Landon who was sprawled out on his stomach, arms and legs extended outward underneath my coworker's car. He fad found relief from the scorching sun outside. (Current temperature: 96 degrees). Unlike Landon, Wanda was perched on the railing outside the White House (the building adjacent to ours) almost guarding the door. Oh, that crazy Wanda.

Luckily I'm not embarrassed to talk to them. I only get embarrassed when people catch me talking to them. It is only then that I break out into laughter. You think you have problems? You don't even know the half of it!

I will have you know that these encounters are not a result of a lack of sleep. Yesterday I got home after 6 p.m. and laid down for a nap around 7:30 only to wake up passed midnight. I rolled over and went back to bed. When I woke up this morning to my alarm at 6 a.m. I was well rested and ready to start my day.

Go figure.

p.s. This has nothing to do with squirrels, instead it's "Burger and Fries."

Catch Up!

My dad is a funny, funny guy. I was on the phone with him this evening on my way back from San Antonio. He was watching the Lakers/Spurs game. It was halftime, and after I had asked he informed me that the Spurs were up. I preceded to tell him that although the Lakers are from our home state, I was routing for the Spurs. He too, was routing for the them, and said he liked them. Later in our conversation, he said "I think I figured out why you're a Spurs fan." I asked, "How's that?" thinking he would make the obvious connection that my territory for recruiting is the "beautiful city of San Antonio" and would naturally route for the local team. He replied, "When you watch the Lakers play and they show shots of the fans, you inevitably see Jack Nicholson. When you watch the Spurs play and they show shots of the fans, who do you see?" Knowing the answer before he finish I announced "Eva Longoria!" He confirmed we were on the same page and laughed.

Moving on. I realized I had neglected the blog the past 7 days. Honestly, I would think about posting as I was getting under the covers and concluding that my exhaustion would prevent me from writing a worth-while post. (Although that hasn't stopped Kristian... JUST KIDDING!) I will however recap the big points deserving notification.

Thursday & Friday our office went on our annual Summer Retreat. The event took place at Freeman Ranch with the gorgeous Texas hill country as a backdrop. In attendance were the usual suspects along with our Associate Director in Evaluations and VP for Enrollment Management & Marketing as guests. The food was great, lots of work got done, and breaks were taken advantage of for throwing around the old pigskin. After the first day concluded our caravan went back to campus and folks went home. I was so exhausted that I took an hour long nap on the floor in my corner office (not under my desk though as has been the case in past offices.) The last day of the retreat flew by quickly with nothing too big to talk about.

What Fun People to work with!

The rest of my weekend was spend struggling through, with what I've come to realize has been, allergies. Oh, central Texas. You dirty pirate hooker. Again with the allergies. It spilled in to the beginning of the work week through tonight. Tonight was spent as indicated in the beginning of this post in San Antonio. I had a college fair to attend. It wasn't a fast paced or heavily attended fair, but what made it unique was that the coordinator invited the whole district (K-12). I spoke with a lot of your kiddos. It was great, especially because tomorrow I'm presenting to 300 3rd and 4th graders. The thought still makes me nervous. Yikes!

On the way home I took this photograph.

This picture is for Kristian...

He called me from Morocco. We spent the first five minutes discussing and concocting a test to figure out how long the voice delay was. We hadn't exchanged dialog in, what 9 months?, and we spend the first five minutes on testing the voice delay?!?!?!?!!?!? We brought our idiocy to our attention and then began to laugh. We couldn't expect out conversation to start off any other way. This picture, how insignificant it is, especially since it isn't even a good shot, I had to take while on the phone with him. I was describing how dumb I was for taking a rural route to the high school and constantly announcing how I kept thinking I was lost and then realizing I was on the lousy stinking road I was supposed to be on in the first place. I pulled over to take this shot and said I'd show it to him. So there it is.

Any comments, folks?

How shall I put this?

Where do I begin?

Oh! Here. I received notification from Outlook this morning, that I was the recipient of an email that was marked for Junk Mail. I saw this message earlier in the week too. I almost disregarded the message but thought, "Self, that's two this week. I'm popular with the spammers it seems" and decided to see what spam I was getting at work. To my surprise, it was a note from Jeremy with a link to YouTube and the video was of a prominent figure demonstrating a poor attitude. I glanced to see what email I received earlier in the week and again I had an unexpected email from an old friend. Rebecca a.k.a. Becky, my former supervisor during my internship in Student Activities & Leadership Programs at Western was going to be stopping in San Marcos with students on the way to a Leadership Retreat.

Becky is the Director for Student Involvement at a university here in Texas. She's also a kind hearted, warm, and intelligent human being. She was thoughtful enough to make an attempt to contact me so that we might hang out while she was in the area, which we did end up doing tonight. However, Becky needed to get a hold of me and utilized an online social network to do so. She took time to read up on me, and see how I was doing. This seems like a reasonable expectation. I know I do the same for friends I haven't been able to keep in touch with. It helps spark conversation when opportunities to chat present themselves.

Tonight during dinner at Bennigan's, Becky was bringing up standard "catch up" conversations. She got around to bringing up relationships. She made reference to my Complicated Relationship status on Facebook. I explained how I know Alex, who is my best friend's brother and how funny it was that we were in a "Complicated Relationship" but that it wasn't real. She asked if I had been looking? I told her that I was, but not actively. She asked if my campus was a "welcoming, community friendly campus"...

?

Looks I had to explain that I was straight (not narrow). I laughed to myself and continued on with the catching up. Now... looking back at that conversation, I also brought up how previous to Alex I was in a Complicated Relationship with Kristian. (Kris, I'm sorry if I led Becky to think that you are gay). I've shared in plenty of conversations about sexual orientation. In my opinion, people are who they are, and if they are happy, I'm happy for them. I did for a moment however, reevaluate whether or not my relationship status on Facebook was appropriate or not. My conclusion was that people can think what they wish to think. I don't believe my relationship status is inappropriate, nor offensive. If a person thinks less of me because of it, or because they think that orientation/lifestyle is wrong... then so be it. People are entitled to their opinions, and their opinions won't change what I am or am not. (For clarification, Becky doesn't fall into the category of unfavored opinions. As a worldly, intelligent, supportive person who would still respect me if I were gay, Canadian, or communist.)

If there is a lesson here, which I'm sure there are tons!, I will address this: Sometime people will come across information about you that may lead them to make assumptions about you. That's not wrong. That's human nature. The question is, if you are the person putting that information out there, is it being perceived the way you intended it to. If not, what is your response?

Will I change my relationship status after this incident (possibly multiple incidences that I am unaware of)?

Hell no!

I'm not ashamed. It's not something I, nor anyone else should feel wrong about being thought of. I grew up in San Francisco. You know what they say about people from San Francisco? "They're smug and love the smell of their own farts." Besides that. All I'm saying is you can assume what you want, or want what you amuse. Whatever that means.

It's Sunday, and what am I doing?

I'm sleeping in!

It is now 11:00am and I am finally rolling out of bed. First things first, I must deal with my obsession (j/k). I've had talks with people about this issue of mine. It's not a problem, but it's something I must deal with multiple times a day. Before you start thinking it's something gross, I'll just come out with it. I have a poking problem on Facebook. I wake up in the morning and I have 20 pokes waiting. By mid-day I sometimes have up to 30+. Some people say, we just don't poke back. However, it is completely obvious that they don't understand what a poke war is.

Oh Tangent.

So now that I am awake and ready to move about, I will get cleaned up because in less than half an hour, Homeboy Andy will be picking me up so we can grab food on the north side and hit up the Asian markets. I need to get my fix every now and then and I'm glad he called this morning with the invite.

As for the rest of my day, since it is sunny outside I might go and run Town Lake (a.k.a. Ladybird Lake) lay out by the pool and get some sun, and move some of my stuff over to the new place. In fact, I have some meat in the freezer that I might leave out to thaw so that I might cook dinner tonight. Great idea, Burrito!

I hope you all out there have a nice day!

Another Graduation

Before I go any further, let me state for the record that I despise when people write "Congradulations." I want to punch people in the face who do that. Not cute. In fact, it has confused some people who I consider to have some smarts to use it where it isn't even relevant. Case in point, a guy I went to college with posted on a mutual friend's Facebook Wall something along the lines of "Congradulations on having a baby." W.hy T.he F.rown?

On a happier note, friends are graduating left and right. I don't even know how many friends from Western have graduated this semester. Then, to top it off, I have friends and student I work with who are graduating today and tomorrow. It is truly a happy time of year.

It causes me to reflect on my graduation more than a year ago. Mom and Jess, my eldest brother, flew in for commencement. The night before we went out drinking. Friends, family, and all. I had shown up the following morning at Miller Auditorium with a gallon of water in hand. The ceremony went by rather quick, at least to the point that I don't recall being struck with boredom. Actually, as horrible as it may seem, I almost forgot who I sat next to. Alas, I did recall it was my dear friend April.

The stage at my graduation.

My mom and I afterwards.

Graduation will cause varying emotional responses from different people. Since I had devoted so much of myself to my Alma Mater in student employment, leadership programs, student organizations, student activities, and more. As a result, my graduation was bitter sweet. I don't know if the the student I will see today, most of whom I know are young ladies, will share the same feelings I had. However, because of the manner in which I've gotten to know them, I believe the feelings we share towards graduation will be very similar.

There isn't much left for me to say except, "Congratulations Graduates!"

What do you do for your best friend's birthday?

I have some outstanding best friends. What can I say? I hang with a pretty awesome crowd.

Today happens to be one of my best friend's birthday.

Jeremy is an awesome person. He has many adoring fans. For that reason, I will refrain from using his last name. Stalkers can get to be pretty crazy nowadays. However, he is so cool that I am dedicating this whole post to him. Please feel free to laugh and giggle. My feeling wont be hurt one bit. And for any of you single ladies, Jeremy is available and full of money. Hahahaha not really... or I$ he?

Jeremy at age one. He grew quick. Even proofread at 16 months.

Holding his nephew, who actually like me more than Jer.

This is a trick that I taught him!

Takes advantage of pillows.

Has a thing for Mexicans. Hahaha well... who doesn't love Jaq?

The awesome little sis!

"Loud Noises!"

This is what I imagine Jer's reaction to this posting will be.

Rather than end with a picture of Jeremy with head in hands, I thought I'd add this tasteful video I came across... totally not planned. Nope, completely random.

Although I can't celebrate with you this weekend, we'll make up for it when you are down to visit.
Happy Birthday!

Rough Morning

I was not out all hours of the night. I hadn't been drinking until the wee hours of the morning. I wasn't involving myself debauchery or shenanigans of sorts. No! I was talking to my brother Jess on AIM chat, and ended that conversation to go to bed probably before midnight. Why then did I wake up this morning, not to my radio alarm clock, not to one of the two alarms on my cell phone, but to my friend from work, Stacey, calling to ask me if I was alright? I was confused as to why she was calling me so early on the weekend. Then I popped (the first time I typed this I typed pooped) up from my covers looked over at the clock that read 9:37am. Crap! I wrapped up the conversation with Sparky, and called my boss to give him the update and preceded to get ready for the day that got started without me.

Here I am at the office on my lunch break. Not how I pictured what my Monday would look like yesterday, but then again as my mom so wrongly says, "caca pasa." None-the-less, I take things as they come. I cut my lunch by a half hour to get more work done. but had to leave the other 30 minutes for posting in my blog and getting a drink at the 7-11 down the street. I have 2 back-to-back appointments in the afternoon and a meeting with Sparky to close out the work day.

This evening I will be going to see my long lost friend, Kcie (who has three [1][2][3]of my CDs which I've been eager to get back). She's throwing a Cinco de Mayo potluck at her apartment. Haven't figured out what I was going to bring, but I don't need to show up until after 8pm. I have plenty of time to figure that part out. I will however take the time to wish you all a happy and safe Cinco de Mayo!

And in the spirit of many past celebrations:
Arriba!
Abajo!
Al centro!
y pa'dentro!
